UEFA shifts Champions League final to 5pm BST for Budapest clash
The European governing body cites improved transport access, economic benefits for the host city, and broader digital engagement as key factors behind the three-hour earlier start time.

UEFA has formally adjusted the kick-off time for the 2025 Champions League final, moving the start to 5pm BST on 30 May. This represents a significant departure from the traditional 8pm BST slot, with the governing body stating the change is designed to optimise matchday logistics and enhance the overall experience for supporters and host cities.
The decision applies to the contest between Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest. In a statement, UEFA outlined that the earlier start aims to improve public transport access for travelling fans and ensure safer journeys home. The organisation also noted that the schedule change is intended to boost the economic impact for the host city by allowing attendees to extend their celebrations into the evening.
UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin emphasised that the shift places fan experience at the centre of operational planning. He argued that while a 9pm local time is suitable for midweek fixtures, an earlier Saturday start ensures an earlier finish regardless of whether the match goes to extra time or penalties. This structure, according to the federation, allows supporters to enjoy the remainder of their evening with family and friends.
The scheduling adjustment also reflects a strategic alignment with broadcasting windows aimed at engaging younger global audiences. While the specific local time in Budapest was not detailed, the 5pm BST start ensures a broader television and digital reach. This marks the first time since the competition rebranded from the European Cup in 1992 that the final will not be free-to-air in the United Kingdom.
In the UK, coverage will be available on TNT Sports 1, with live broadcast commencing at 7pm BST. International viewers in the United States can access the match via CBS and Paramount+, while Spanish-language coverage is provided by Univision and TUDN. The pre-match entertainment will be headlined by The Killers, continuing a tradition of high-profile musical performances at the event.
Arsenal face the defending champions, Paris Saint-Germain, in a fixture charged with recent history. PSG defeated Inter Milan 5-0 to claim the title in Munich last year, while Arsenal seek redemption after losing 3-1 on aggregate to the French side in the semi-finals of the previous season. The English club is also navigating a tight Premier League title race against Manchester City as the season approaches its conclusion.
