UConn appoints Charlie Stevens as men’s basketball general manager
The University of Connecticut has hired Charlie Stevens, a five-year San Antonio Spurs veteran, to manage name, image and likeness and transfer portal affairs under head coach Dan Hurley.
The University of Connecticut men’s basketball programme has appointed Charlie Stevens as its new general manager, a UConn source confirmed to Linxi News. The appointment, first reported by Hardwood Intel on X, marks a significant administrative shift for the Huskies as they navigate the evolving landscape of collegiate athletics.
Stevens, a Bronx native, joins UConn from the San Antonio Spurs, where he spent the past five seasons rising through the basketball operations department. His tenure began as a basketball operations strategy and scouting assistant following his 2021 graduation from Clark University, where he served as a two-year team captain. He was promoted to player engagement and grassroots scouting coordinator in 2023 before assuming the role of director of grassroots scouting last summer.
He succeeds Tom Moore, who held the newly created general manager position for one year before announcing his retirement at age 61. Moore’s departure leaves a vacancy in a role that typically oversees name, image and likeness (NIL) matters and transfer portal issues, although the scope of duties has varied under previous leadership. Stevens is expected to manage these specific areas under head coach Dan Hurley, though the exact parameters of his responsibilities remain to be determined.
The hire reinforces the growing operational ties between UConn and the San Antonio Spurs. The connection is highlighted by the recent NBA success of UConn alumni within the Spurs’ organisation, including Stephon Castle and Tarris Reed Jr. Castle, a 2024 lottery pick, won NBA Rookie of the Year and helped lead the Spurs to the NBA Finals, while Reed Jr. was selected in the first round after helping UConn reach its third national championship game in four years.
Sources indicated that UConn sought a younger candidate with NBA experience and overseas ties to fill the position. Stevens, described by sources as having extensive connections throughout the basketball world, fits this profile. The university is expected to make an official announcement later this week.
