Ubisoft greenlights ‘Kodiak’ open-world shooter at Vantage Studios following ‘Maverick’ cancellation
The new codenamed project aims to utilise foundational work from the cancelled title, with release expected several years out.

Ubisoft has confirmed that a new entry in the Far Cry franchise is currently in development at its Vantage Studios subsidiary. According to a report from Insider Gaming, the project, codenamed Kodiak, is being developed as an open-world first-person shooter that prioritises player-driven stories and interactions.
The announcement follows the reported cancellation of another franchise title, codenamed Maverick, which was rumoured to be an extraction shooter. While the specific genre of Kodiak differs from Maverick, Ubisoft intends to utilise the foundational work established during the development of the cancelled project.
Kodiak is described in the report as a “really ambitious” title. However, the publisher has not provided a specific release window, with reports indicating the game is still several years away from launch. It remains unclear whether Kodiak will serve as a standalone entry or fit into the numerical sequence of the franchise following the 2021 release.
Simultaneously, Ubisoft is continuing work on the next mainline entry in the series, currently known by the codename Blackbird and expected to be Far Cry 7. This development comes more than three years after the last mainline instalment, with the publisher also managing other franchise expansions such as a television show in development.
The confirmation of Kodiak’s development highlights Ubisoft’s strategy to maintain momentum in the Far Cry brand while navigating internal project shifts. The reliance on Insider Gaming for details regarding the codenames and project statuses underscores the speculative nature of these early-stage developments.
