World Cup warm-up: England 1-0 New Zealand

England head coach Thomas Tuchel has concluded his extensive pre-World Cup experimentation with a 1-0 victory over New Zealand in Tampa on 6 June 2026. The match, described by BBC Sport’s Phil McNulty as a “glorified training session,” saw Tuchel deploy 22 different players across the two halves, the first time England has done so since June 2004.

Harry Kane scored the winning goal just before half-time, marking his 79th international goal in 113 appearances. The header from a Djed Spence cross proved decisive against a New Zealand side ranked significantly lower in the world standings. With the first half concluding, Tuchel implemented 11 changes to the starting lineup, utilising the fixture to assess squad depth in testing, humid conditions.

Key players Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka were rested following their Premier League title win and Champions League final appearance. The second half saw the return of Ivan Toney after a year-long absence from the squad, while Reece James completed 45 minutes at right-back. Liverpool teenager Rio Ngumoha, though not part of the World Cup squad, made a substitute appearance, becoming the fifth youngest player to represent England.

Tuchel expressed satisfaction with the second-half performance, citing increased “hunger and desire,” despite the team failing to score in that period. “We didn’t play according to our plan in the first half,” Tuchel said. “It slowed the game down, but it was better in the second half.” He noted that players are still acclimatising to the climate, with former England defender Stephen Warnock suggesting it takes approximately two weeks for players to reach full sharpness.

England’s next fixture is a final warm-up match against Costa Rica in Orlando on 17 June 2026, followed by their World Cup opener against Croatia in Dallas on the same day. Tuchel indicated that the Costa Rica game would be the opportunity to “wheel out the big guns” and establish a more definitive starting lineup ahead of the tournament.
