Bellingham has fight to start for England - Tuchel
Manager cites depth of squad as Real Madrid midfielder fights for starting role

England manager Thomas Tuchel has cautioned that Jude Bellingham must contend with significant internal competition to feature in the starting XI at the World Cup 2026. Speaking to reporters, the German coach highlighted the depth of his current squad, noting there are 14 or 15 players capable of performing as starters, with Bellingham included in that group.

Since Tuchel replaced Gareth Southgate in January 2025, Bellingham has started only four matches for the national team, with three further appearances coming from the bench. In contrast, Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers has been the preferred choice, featuring in 12 of Tuchel’s 13 matches in charge and appearing in all eight World Cup qualifying fixtures.

Tuchel acknowledged the shift in selection dynamics, stating, "Yes, he has [a fight]. He is one of the starters, he knows he is one of the starters, but we have 14 or 15 potential starters." He emphasised that while these roles remain fluid, the current squad composition presents a highly competitive environment for starting positions.

The midfielder’s recent form has drawn praise from the manager, particularly following England’s 1-0 warm-up victory over New Zealand in Tampa. Bellingham came on at half-time, took the captain’s armband, and was subsequently named vice-captain for the tournament. Tuchel described the player as being in a "sweet spot," noting he is fresh, energetic, and in top physical shape following a break during the decisive phase of the Real Madrid season.

Tuchel also highlighted Bellingham’s "decisiveness and bite" as key attributes, marking a shift from previous criticisms regarding the player’s on-field conduct. The manager had previously described Bellingham’s behaviour during a defeat to Senegal as "repulsive," a comment he later apologised for, and indicated he would review the player’s conduct following a substitution incident against Albania.

Bellingham, who has scored six goals in 47 appearances for England, had previously started all seven matches at Euro 2024. However, his tenure under Tuchel has been interrupted by injury, including a shoulder issue that caused him to miss two qualifying matches in September 2024 and a persistent hamstring problem that kept him out of friendlies in March 2025.
