World Cup rings for winners as Trump attendance confirmed
Governance and protocol take centre stage ahead of Argentina-Spain showdown

Fifa has confirmed that Donald Trump will attend the World Cup final between Argentina and Spain to present the trophy, a move that has been formally validated by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. The confirmation follows earlier statements from Fifa president Gianni Infantino regarding the former US president’s presence at the event, which is scheduled to take place at MetLife Stadium in New York on Sunday.

In a departure from previous tournaments, Fifa will award winner’s rings to the victorious team, a tradition common in American sports such as the Super Bowl. The governing body revealed that thirty rings will be issued to the champions, with an additional 1,996 rings available for sale to fans. Each piece features a mini World Cup trophy design and an engraved band, marking the first time such commemorative jewellery has been introduced to the tournament.

The final arrives amid significant controversy surrounding the tournament’s integrity, particularly concerning the relationship between Infantino and Trump. The US president contacted Infantino to seek a review of the red card suspension for United States striker Folarin Balogun. Consequently, the automatic ban was suspended, allowing Balogun to play in the knockout stage against Belgium, a decision that drew heavy criticism and raised questions about the consistency of disciplinary measures.

No other red or yellow card suspensions have been overturned during this World Cup, despite appeals from France and England. The Balogun incident remains the most prominent example of political intervention in sporting adjudication, contrasting with the standard protocols that have otherwise governed the competition. The USA, which co-hosted the tournament with Canada and Mexico, was subsequently eliminated by Belgium with a 4-1 defeat.

As the final approaches, officials are monitoring environmental conditions in New York, where a weather warning has been issued regarding air quality due to Canadian wildfires. However, there is no indication that the match will be affected. The event will also feature the first-ever World Cup half-time show, curated by Coldplay’s Chris Martin, while England prepares to face France for third place in Miami on Saturday.
