Does Trump Mobile know how many stripes are on the American flag?
Promotional video for the device displays inconsistent imagery, while physical units arrive with fewer stripes than the standard US flag

The Trump Mobile T1 smartphone and its associated promotional materials display an American flag with an incorrect number of stripes, according to a report by The Verge. The physical device features 11 stripes on its rear logo rather than the standard 13, which represent the original colonies. A promotional video for the phone exhibits further inconsistencies, including a shot that appears to show only nine stripes.

The publication notes that an earlier version of the phone’s logo, shown in February, reportedly featured the correct 13 stripes. The final logo on the physical device was altered to remove two stripes. The report suggests these errors may stem from the use of generative AI in the marketing process, though it acknowledges that some physical filming likely occurred given inconsistencies in the video’s texture and lighting.

Inconsistencies in the promotional video include varying textures of the phone’s gold finish, different boot-up screens, and multiple versions of the packaging. A fleeting scratch on the camera module appears in one shot but is absent in subsequent shots, leading The Verge to speculate that the video mixes real footage with AI-generated content. The publication questions how a company could produce such disjointed marketing assets.

Despite earlier claims that shipping would commence that week, Trump Mobile has not yet shipped units to customers. The Verge reported that it had not received shipping alerts for two phones ordered, and the company’s account showed a “T1 deposit” for a cell plan the author did not order. The account status listed an expiry date of “To be assigned,” with unclear terms regarding the service.

The report highlights that the discrepancy between the 11-stripe physical device and the nine-stripe video shot remains unexplained. It is unclear whether Trump Mobile intentionally altered the flag design or if the errors were the result of incompetence. The publication also noted that the president has previously expressed support for laws criminalising flag-burning, making the design errors particularly notable.
