Tigers’ Record Slips to 20-26 After Extra-Innings Defeat to Blue Jays
Detroit falls short in 10 innings at Comerica Park as Toronto capitalises on late opportunities to improve their own standing to 20-25.

The Detroit Tigers suffered a 2-1 defeat to the Toronto Blue Jays in a 10-inning contest at Comerica Park on Saturday, May 16. The loss dropped the Tigers’ record to 20-26, while the Blue Jays improved to 20-25. Despite a strong pitching performance from Casey Mize, the Tigers were unable to secure the win after their bullpen surrendered two runs in the late innings.
Mize made his first start since April 28, returning from a left adductor strain that caused him to leave a game against the Atlanta Braves. He pitched six scoreless innings on just 71 pitches, allowing two hits and striking out four batters while issuing no walks. Mize navigated early trouble in the first inning, grounding Vladimir Guerrero Jr. into a double play, and escaped a jam in the fifth by striking out Jesús Sánchez and inducing a pop out from Lenyn Sosa.
Matt Vierling provided the Tigers’ only run with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning, giving Detroit a 1-0 lead. However, the advantage was short-lived. Blue Jays left fielder Yohendrick Piñango tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the seventh with a solo home run off reliever Kyle Finnegan on the first pitch of the inning.
The Tigers struggled to generate offence, recording only four hits through the first seven innings and striking out 11 times. Late-inning opportunities failed to materialise, including a threat in the bottom of the ninth where Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson singled, but Colt Keith struck out with the go-ahead run in scoring position. In the top of the tenth, Daulton Varsho drove in the winning run with an RBI single.
Reliever Connor Seabold made his first appearance since April 25, having been activated off the injured list on Friday, while Kenley Jansen pitched the ninth inning. The Tigers and Blue Jays will conclude the series on Sunday at 1:40 p.m., with Jack Flaherty scheduled to start against Kevin Gausman.
