Left hamstring strain raises questions for Oklahoma City’s playoff run

Oklahoma City Thunder wing Jalen Williams has been listed as day-to-day with a left hamstring injury, with his availability for Friday’s Game 3 of the Western Conference finals against the San Antonio Spurs remaining uncertain. According to sources cited by ESPN’s Shams Charania on Thursday, Williams will undergo treatment and his return will be determined on a game-to-game basis, dependent on how he feels during recovery.

Williams travelled with the team to San Antonio on Thursday afternoon, but his status for the upcoming match is expected to be listed as questionable. This development marks the second injury to the same hamstring for the star player in under a month, adding a layer of complexity to the Thunder’s tactical preparations for the critical playoff fixture.

The injury occurred during the Thunder’s Game 2 victory over the Spurs, where Williams exited after playing only seven minutes. Prior to his departure, he had recorded 19 points and four assists in 23 minutes of play. This follows a strong performance in the playoff opener, where he contributed 22 points, seven rebounds, and six assists, as well as a 37-minute double-overtime effort in Game 1 that saw him score 26 points.

This latest setback is part of a broader pattern of physical challenges for Williams throughout the season. He previously missed six games earlier in the playoffs due to a Grade 1 left hamstring strain before returning for Monday’s series opener against the Spurs. The injury originally stemmed from a strain sustained during the third quarter of Oklahoma City’s Game 2 win over the Phoenix Suns earlier in the postseason.

Williams’ health has been a significant factor in his recent career trajectory. During the regular season, he was limited to just 33 games due to various injuries, including missing the first 19 games while recovering from right wrist surgery and enduring two extended stints out due to a right hamstring strain. Despite these hurdles, the third-team All-NBA selection from last season played a pivotal role in the Thunder’s title run, overcoming a right wrist injury that required offseason surgery.
