Thunder face structural challenge after Western Conference finals defeat
Oklahoma City Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault and captain Shai Gilgeous-Alexander are reviewing tactical responses following a 122-115 double-overtime loss to the San Antonio Spurs in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals.

The Oklahoma City Thunder suffered a 122-115 double-overtime defeat to the San Antonio Spurs in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals on Monday, prompting an immediate review of defensive strategies and ball security. The reigning NBA champions were unable to contain Victor Wembanyama, who recorded 41 points and 24 rebounds on 14-for-25 shooting, or Dylan Harper, who contributed 24 points and 11 rebounds in the absence of De'Aaron Fox.
Head coach Mark Daigneault acknowledged the difficulty of matching up against San Antonio’s physical profile, noting that the team must develop a tactical feel for Wembanyama’s presence. The Thunder initially assigned Jalen Williams to guard the 7-foot-4 forward, but the matchup created structural issues for the rest of the roster. Wembanyama shot 10-for-12 when defended by Williams, Alex Caruso, or Lu Dort, forcing the Thunder to reduce Isaiah Hartenstein’s playing time to 12 minutes as they shifted to a smaller lineup.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander responded to the defensive pressure by altering his offensive approach. After struggling early, he capitalized on switches against Stephon Castle, recording 24 points and 12 assists on 7-for-23 shooting. Gilgeous-Alexander completed 30 drives to the rim, a volume that exceeded the totals of Harper and Castle, who tied for the second-highest on the Spurs. He emphasised the need to balance aggression with patience when attacking the paint.
The Thunder’s ball security was compromised by Harper’s activity in the passing lanes, resulting in 15 turnovers for OKC. While Chet Holmgren provided a defensive counter by limiting Wembanyama to 6-for-12 shooting and blocking the Spurs’ game-winning attempt at the end of regulation, the overall defensive scheme failed to mitigate San Antonio’s size advantage.
Game 2 is scheduled for Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City. Daigneault stated that the team’s problem-solving capabilities will be tested as they seek to replicate the defensive adjustments they developed earlier in the season against the Spurs.
