A retrospective analysis of the ThinkPad laptop line underscores its status as one of the longest-running commercial laptop families, maintaining visual continuity from its 1992 IBM debut to Lenovo’s 2026 AI workstations. The brand’s identity, characterised by a matte-black chassis and the distinctive red TrackPoint, has persisted across two corporate owners. Key milestones in this evolution include the 2005 acquisition of IBM’s PC division by Lenovo, the 2012 introduction of the 6-row Precision Keyboard, and the 2026 release of the P14s Gen 6, which supports local 70-billion-parameter large language model workloads with up to 96 GB of DDR5 SODIMMs.
The lineage began on 5 October 1992, when IBM announced the ThinkPad 300, 700, and 700C as its inaugural clamshell notebook lineup. The 700C featured a 10.4-inch active-matrix colour TFT display and an in-keyboard TrackPoint II, priced at approximately US$4,350. This configuration allows for the local inference of 70-billion-parameter large language models, a capability that contrasts with competitors like the MacBook Air and Dell X14, which typically use soldered LPDDR5X.
