Texas Tech secures veteran wing Darrion Williams for fifth season amid NCAA eligibility shifts
The 6-foot-6 forward joins Texas Tech for his final year of eligibility, following temporary court rulings that have opened the door for additional seasons of college competition.
Darrion Williams has committed to Texas Tech for his fifth and final season of college basketball eligibility, adding significant experience to the Red Raiders’ roster. The 6-foot-6 wing returns to the program where he previously played two seasons, having most recently spent a year at NC State where he averaged 14.0 points per game.
Williams’ decision comes as a growing number of athletes pursue a fifth year of eligibility following temporary court injunctions that have permitted certain players to compete for an additional season. This legal development has prompted schools across the NCAA to integrate experienced transfers into their lineups, with Texas Tech securing one of the more notable additions for the upcoming campaign.
Kentucky had expressed interest in Williams last month, according to reporting by Ben Roberts of the Lexington Herald-Leader, but failed to secure his signature. The Wildcats viewed the wing as a valuable addition to their frontcourt, particularly as they navigate injury concerns. Kam Williams, a key contributor for Kentucky, is currently recovering from second foot surgery and has missed summer workouts, creating a depth gap that Williams would have helped fill.
For Texas Tech, Williams brings a proven track record of production and durability. During his tenure at NC State, he averaged 14.0 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game while shooting 40.4 per cent from three-point range. Prior to his time in Raleigh, he started 67 games across two seasons at Texas Tech and earned Mountain West Freshman of the Year honours during his debut season at Nevada.
With Williams opting for Texas Tech, Kentucky head coach Mark Pope is expected to pivot his recruitment efforts. Potential targets for the Wildcats now include Michigan State forward Jaxon Kohler, Missouri forward Mark Mitchell, and Auburn forward Keyshawn Hall. The situation remains fluid, with the eligibility landscape continuing to develop, potentially offering Kentucky further opportunities to bolster their roster before the 2026-27 season begins.
