Texas softball drops Game 1 of Super Regional to Arizona State
Defending national champions must win two straight games to reach Women's College World Series

The Texas Longhorns softball team faces immediate elimination from the NCAA Postseason Softball Tournament after suffering a 4-1 defeat to the Arizona State Sun Devils in Game 1 of their Super Regional series. The loss, which took place at McCombs Field in Austin, Texas, on May 23, 2026, places the defending national champions in a precarious position as they trail in the best-of-three series.

Arizona State pitcher Kenzie Brown delivered a commanding performance on the mound, pitching a complete game that allowed only one run on four hits while recording 10 strikeouts. In contrast, Texas ace Teagan Kavan, who was named the Most Outstanding Player of the previous year’s Women’s College World Series, struggled to contain the Sun Devils’ offence. Kavan allowed four runs, three of them earned, on eight hits and two walks.

Despite the pitching struggles, Texas catcher Samantha Swan provided significant offensive support, going 2-for-4 at the plate with three runs batted in. However, the Longhorns’ efforts were insufficient to overcome Arizona State’s dominance, resulting in a final score of 4-1. The defeat marks a sharp turn for Texas, which entered the Super Regional with a perfect record at the Austin Regional.

Arizona State enters the series with considerable momentum, having demonstrated their capability to upset higher-seeded opponents. The Sun Devils recently defeated Texas A&M in the Regional round and had previously upset Texas Tech to win the Big 12 tournament. As the No. 19 seed, their victory over the No. 2 overall seed Texas underscores the competitive volatility of the postseason.

The Longhorns now face a critical juncture in their campaign. To avoid elimination and secure a berth in the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City, Texas must win two consecutive games against the Sun Devils. The outcome of the remaining matches will determine whether the defending champions can extend their title defence or exit the tournament in Austin.
