Texas A&M secures top-tier quarterback commitment in early recruiting cycle

Texas A&M University has secured a significant early commitment from five-star quarterback Donald Tabron II, a prospect from Detroit, Michigan. The announcement, made on Saturday evening, marks the second recruit for the Aggies’ 2028 class and represents the highest-rated quarterback pledge under head coach Mike Elko.
Tabron, listed at 6’4” and 190lbs, selected Texas A&M over competing offers from Louisiana State University (LSU) and the University of Oregon. According to 247 Sports’ composite rankings, Tabron is the No. 3 quarterback and the No. 29 recruit nationally in the Class of 2028. He is also ranked as the second-best player in Michigan for his cohort.
Reports indicate that a significant factor in Tabron’s decision was the recent cease-and-desist letter issued by Jayden Daniels, which prohibits LSU from recruiting five-star prospects. While the direct impact of such letters on recruiting compliance remains a subject of discussion, the administrative landscape surrounding LSU appears to have influenced the prospect’s final choice.
The commitment places Tabron alongside Louisiana edge rusher Chance Archangel as the second signee for the 2028 class. Early rankings currently place the Aggies’ 2028 class at No. 6 nationally, though analysts caution that such standings are premature given that National Signing Day is approximately 16 months away.
This acquisition addresses a specific gap in Texas A&M’s recent recruiting efforts. While the university currently holds the No. 1 ranking for the 2027 class, previous cycles under Elko lacked top-flight quarterback commitments. Tabron’s pledge is viewed as a catalyst for building further talent in College Station, strengthening the program’s on-field prospects for the near future.
