Texas A&M's future safety rotation secured after recruitment shutdown
Head coach Mike Elko prioritises hard-hitting recruits to replace departing starters

Texas A&M University has solidified its defensive backfield planning for the near future, securing commitments from five-star recruit Kamauri Dorsey and four-star recruit JayQuan Snell following the conclusion of their recruitment processes. The moves provide head coach Mike Elko with a clear trajectory for the safety position group as the program looks beyond the 2026 season.

Elko, who enters his third season as head coach in 2026, has built a roster aimed at competing for a second consecutive College Football Playoff appearance. His strategic focus on the secondary is informed by his extensive background as a former standout safety at Penn and his subsequent coaching career, which includes roles at Wake Forest and Notre Dame. Elko previously served as Texas A&M’s defensive coordinator and safeties coach from 2018 to 2021 under former head coach Jimbo Fisher.

The recruitment of JayQuan Snell was particularly prioritised by Elko due to the coach’s affinity for hard-hitting players. While running backs coach Trooper Taylor led Dorsey’s recruitment, Elko’s personal interest in Snell’s physical style led the program to pursue him more aggressively than other institutions. Snell shut down his recruitment on Friday afternoon, June 5, 2026, shortly after Dorsey did the same late last month.

Looking ahead to the 2027 season, Dorsey is expected to compete for a starting role. This timeline aligns with the anticipated departure of current starting safeties Dalton Brooks and Marcus Ratcliffe after the 2026 season. The addition of Dorsey is further bolstered by the likely return of Colorado State transfer Tawfiq Byard, creating a robust group to challenge opponents.

Snell is projected to serve as a reserve during his freshman year in 2027 before competing for a starting boundary safety position in 2028. These commitments ensure that Texas A&M’s defensive rotation remains competitive and well-stocked as the program maintains its high standards for defensive performance.
