Texans tackle Ersery cites confidence and clarity as key gains in second year

Houston Texans offensive tackle Aireontae Ersery has identified a significant shift in his professional trajectory as he enters his second season, citing restored confidence and physical strength as primary areas of improvement. Speaking to the media following Day 2 of minicamp, Ersery described his rookie campaign as the most challenging of his career, marked by injuries and illness during the combine and Senior Bowl that hindered his ability to regain full power. The focus for the 2026 season is now firmly on executing the playbook with the physicality required for the NFL.

The offensive line unit, which Ersery believes has unlimited potential, is being guided by a renewed sense of leadership and structure. He pointed to Cole Popovich as a central figure in the unit’s development, noting that the group is playing with a toughness and intelligence that aligns with the team’s identity. Head Coach DeMeco Ryans has taken a direct interest in the unit’s development, a move Ersery described as refreshing given that such intensive coaching is typically reserved for the defensive side.

Communication within the offence has been markedly improved under the direction of offensive coordinator Nick Caley. Ersery noted a distinct change in the atmosphere of the huddle, describing the current scheme as characterised by calmness and over-communication. This contrasts with the previous season, where Ersery felt players were often unsettled. The emphasis on ensuring every player is set before the snap is intended to facilitate a faster tempo of play.

Quarterback C.J. Stroud has taken a commanding role in the team’s off-season training activities, a dynamic that Ersery praised. The offensive line has been instructed to support Stroud’s leadership, with the unit committed to executing whatever is required to facilitate his success. This collaborative approach is expected to permeate down the line, fostering a cohesive unit that can maintain speed and precision during games.

The competitive environment at minicamp remains high, particularly with the return of defensive end Danielle Hunter and the presence of Will Anderson Jr. Ersery emphasised the necessity of matching the intensity of these defenders, stating that he must bring his best performance every day to keep pace with Anderson’s relentless speed. The rivalry between the lines is viewed as a catalyst for mutual improvement.

New additions to the roster have also drawn positive attention from the veteran tackle. Ersery expressed optimism about running back David Montgomery, praising his crisp footwork and leadership qualities. Having watched Montgomery play previously, Ersery noted his ability to adapt quickly and his toughness, which fits the physical brand of football the Texans aim to play. The integration of Montgomery and other running backs like Woody Marks is seen as a boost to the ground game.

Leadership on the offensive line is now viewed as a shared responsibility rather than the domain of a single individual. Ersery highlighted a group of vocal leaders, including himself, centre Jake Andrews, guard Wyatt Teller, and young player Rutledge. He stressed that true leadership is demonstrated through consistency and proof over time, requiring players to show up with the same intensity and reliability every day.
