2026 Women's College World Series: Tennessee stuns defending national champion Texas on Day 1
No. 7 Volunteers secure victory over No. 2 Longhorns, shifting bracket dynamics in Oklahoma City

The 2026 Women's College World Series commenced at Devon Park in Oklahoma City with a decisive shift in the tournament's hierarchy. On Day 1, No. 7 Tennessee defeated the defending national champion and No. 2 seed Texas with a 6-3 scoreline. The result sends the Longhorns to the losers' bracket, forcing them to navigate a more difficult path to retain their title compared to their initial bracket positioning.

Tennessee advances to face No. 11 Texas Tech, who secured their own progression by defeating No. 12 Mississippi State 8-0 via run-rule in five innings. Texas Tech, last year's runner-up, continues its postseason campaign with pitcher NiJaree Canady leading the charge. Mississippi State is now scheduled to face Texas in an elimination game on Friday.

The tournament field features several historically significant programmes. No. 1 overall seed Alabama makes its first appearance at the WCWS since 2021, pursuing its second national title in program history. Meanwhile, No. 8 UCLA, the sport's most decorated programme with 12 NCAA titles, continues its postseason run. No. 4 Nebraska also returns to the field, featuring All-American pitcher Jordy Frahm, formerly known as Jordy Bahl.

Regional representation remains strong, with the SEC securing five spots in the field. This includes first-time participants Arkansas and Mississippi State. However, the landscape has shifted for Oklahoma, which is absent from the WCWS for the first time since 2015. This marks the end of a nine-year streak of appearances for the Sooners, a period during which they won six national championships.

Upcoming matchups are set to continue the double-elimination format. Game 3 sees No. 1 Alabama take on No. 8 UCLA at 7 p.m. on ESPN2, followed by Game 4 between No. 4 Nebraska and No. 5 Arkansas at 9:30 p.m. on the same channel. Game 7, featuring the clash between Texas Tech and Tennessee, is scheduled for 3 p.m. on ABC.
