Lady Volunteers sweep Georgia to clinch NCAA softball tournament spot

The Tennessee Lady Volunteers have become the first team to secure a place in the 2026 NCAA Women’s College World Series. The victory was confirmed after the team swept the Georgia Bulldogs in the Super Regional round, effectively ending the series without the need for a deciding third game.

Tennessee defeated the Bulldogs with scores of 3-1 in the first game and 2-1 in the second. This result concludes the Super Regional phase, where 16 teams competed for eight available spots in the final tournament. The Lady Volunteers’ advancement marks the beginning of the postseason culmination for the NCAA.

The team’s path to Oklahoma City followed a resilient run through the conference playoffs. After finishing the regular season with a 47-10 record and 16-8 in the SEC, Tennessee suffered a second-round loss to Ole Miss in the SEC tournament. However, the team rebounded to win five consecutive games, allowing just one run in four of those contests.

Pitching has been the primary driver of this success. Key pitchers Erin Nuwer, Sage Mardjetko, and Karyn Pickens have anchored the team’s defence, with the staff widely regarded as among the best in the conference. Their ability to limit runs has been critical in the team’s recent winning streak.

The 2026 Women’s College World Series is scheduled to take place at Devon Park in Oklahoma City. The event runs from Thursday, 28 May to Friday, 5 June 2026. The tournament structure involves four groups in a double-elimination format, with the winners of Bracket 1 and Bracket 2 contesting a best-of-three series for the national title.
