Swinney defers scrutiny of Clemson’s roster decisions after LSU defeat

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney has rejected questions about whether he regretted the team’s off-season roster construction after a heavy Week 1 defeat by LSU, telling reporter Chapel Fowler that the decisions should be assessed at the end of the season.
According to CBS Sports, Swinney directed an approximately 90-second response at Fowler during a post-match press conference. He said Clemson had played only one game and argued that questions about the roster would be fairer once the season was complete.
The response followed a difficult opening performance for Clemson. The Tigers recorded 145 total yards and converted one of 13 third-down attempts, while quarterback Christopher Vizzina threw a pick-six in his first start.
LSU gained 644 yards, including 335 rushing yards. The result came after Clemson finished 7-6 last season and made significant changes to its personnel and coaching staff.
Clemson signed 11 transfers during the off-season, more than across the previous three cycles combined, but did not sign a transfer quarterback. Instead, the programme selected Vizzina and freshman Tait Reynolds, while former offensive coordinator Chad Morris was re-hired and resumed play-calling.
CBS Sports described Swinney’s response as personal and characterised the defeat as the worst of his Clemson tenure. The longer-term effect of the off-season decisions remains unresolved after one game, with Swinney insisting the record should be counted at season’s end.
