Swiatek advances to Roland Garros fourth round following coaching overhaul
The Polish star defeated compatriot Magda Linette 6-4, 6-4 to set up a clash with Marta Kostyuk, marking a significant shift in her tactical approach after a turbulent start to the season.

Iga Świątek has progressed to the fourth round of the French Open, securing a 6-4, 6-4 victory over compatriot Magda Linette in the third round. The win at Roland Garros marks a pivotal moment for the four-time champion, who has recently integrated new coach Francisco Roig into her team following a period of inconsistent results and a high-profile coaching change. Świątek will next face No. 15 seed Marta Kostyuk, against whom she holds a 3-0 head-to-head record.
The victory serves as a clear benchmark for Świątek’s technical adjustments since parting ways with Wim Fisette in March. The Polish player attributed her success to a return to fluid play and improved decision-making, noting that the scorching heat at the Paris venue has enhanced the potency of her topspin forehand. Świątek stated that she feels more solid in her approach, allowing her to stay in rallies without feeling rushed to finish points immediately, a marked contrast to the hesitation that characterised her earlier performances this year.
Świątek’s path to the fourth round was also influenced by the broader draw, which saw her avoid a potential third-round matchup with Jelena Ostapenko after the Latvian was defeated by Linette earlier in the day. Additionally, the upset of No. 2 seed Elena Rybakina by Yulia Starodubtseva in the second round has potentially positioned Świątek against No. 8 seed Mirra Andreeva in the semifinals. These developments have simplified the draw for Świątek, who has expressed confidence in her ability to adapt to the cooler conditions expected for the remainder of the tournament.
The coaching transition to Roig, a former coach of Rafael Nadal, has been central to Świątek’s recent form. After suffering a shocking second-round loss to Linette at the Miami Open, which ended a 73-match opening-win streak dating back to 2021, Świątek sought a change to address what she described as a complicated mental state and a lack of balance between offensive and defensive styles. Roig has implemented longer rallies in training and adjusted Świątek’s footwork to ensure she remains upright and stable, helping her regain the fluidity that defined her early career.
Świątek acknowledged that while her shot selection against Linette was not flawless and her intensity fluctuated, she maintained control of the match. She emphasised that her improved decision-making allows her to play rationally and trust her intuition, even when facing unpredictable opponents. With the world No. 2 ranking currently held by Rybakina, Świątek’s focus remains on consolidating her position and leveraging the tactical clarity provided by her new coaching setup as she advances deeper into the Grand Slam event.
