VPN provider offers up to 87% discount on annual subscriptions as WIRED highlights competitive entry points for digital privacy services.

Surfshark has launched a promotional campaign for May 2026, offering discounts of up to 87 per cent on subscription plans, according to a report by WIRED. The virtual private network provider is positioning its services as a cost-effective solution for households requiring multiple device connections, with the Surfshark Starter Plan available at $2 per month on a two-year term. This represents a significant reduction from the standard monthly rate of $20, highlighting the provider’s strategy to incentivise long-term commitments.

The Surfshark One+ plan, which integrates data removal services, real-time credit card and ID breach alerts, and anti-malware software, is offered at $4 per month following an 81 per cent discount. WIRED noted that the service supports unlimited simultaneous device connections without bandwidth limitations, a feature that distinguishes it in a market where many competitors restrict the number of active endpoints. The promotion also includes three free months on one- or two-year plans, alongside a seven-day free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee for new subscribers.

For the student demographic, Surfshark is providing a 15 per cent discount through StudentBeans, with graduate students eligible for a rate of $1.99 per month. The referral programme allows existing users to select between up to three free months of service or cash rewards of up to $38 via PayPal when friends sign up and maintain their accounts for 31 days. These incentives are designed to drive user acquisition through existing networks, leveraging the low barrier to entry created by the introductory pricing.

WIRED’s analysis emphasised the operational simplicity of the Surfshark ecosystem, noting that a single subscription covers an entire household without the need for multiple accounts. The report highlighted the inclusion of ad and cookie pop-up blockers, double encryption, and alternative IDs within the basic Starter Plan. Additionally, the Surfshark Antivirus component, which supports up to five devices, offers features such as webcam protection and customizable scan scheduling, further consolidating security services into a single subscription model.

The legal status of VPN usage in the United States remains unrestricted, allowing consumers to utilise Surfshark alongside existing entertainment subscriptions such as Netflix without interruption. WIRED’s testing indicated consistent high speeds, with no observed degradation when streaming high-definition content. However, the publication cautioned that performance metrics are based on personal testing and may vary depending on network conditions. The promotional offers are valid as of May 2026, with specific terms and conditions applying to the referral and student discounts.
