Sunderland in talks over short-term Marseille deal for Geoffrey Kondogbia
Head coach Régis Le Bris is said to be interested in the Central African Republic international’s defensive capabilities, though questions remain regarding his adaptability to the Premier League.

Sunderland are in preliminary discussions with Olympique Marseille regarding a potential short-term signing of midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia, according to a report by French outlet Media Foot. The 33-year-old Central African Republic international is being targeted for a move to the Stadium of Light ahead of the upcoming transfer window, with the club reportedly seeking to secure his services on a low-cost or free transfer basis.
Kondogbia’s current contract with Marseille is set to expire at the end of the 2024/25 season, presenting an opportunity for Sunderland to recruit the experienced player without a significant financial outlay. Head coach Régis Le Bris is understood to be interested in Kondogbia’s defensive capabilities and his ability to add physicality to the squad. The club views him as a rotational piece who can provide "bite and steel" to the midfield options available for the next campaign.
During the previous season, Kondogbia featured in 17 matches for Marseille across various competitions, recording one assist. His availability was limited by injuries, which caused him to miss several games in Ligue 1. Despite these interruptions, he remains regarded as one of the most experienced defensive midfielders in French football, with a skill set that includes strong tackling, reading of danger, and passing ability.
While primarily deployed as a defensive midfielder, Kondogbia has demonstrated the versatility to operate as a centre-back or a box-to-box midfielder if required. His profile suggests he could engineer chances for teammates from deep positions and effectively clear lines when opposition attacks are in progress. However, there are noted concerns regarding whether he can cope with the high intensity of the Premier League, a step up from the Ligue 1 environment in which he has recently played.
The reports have not been independently confirmed by either Sunderland or Marseille, and it remains unclear if a formal agreement has been reached or if these are merely preliminary talks. At 33, Kondogbia is viewed as a player who may still have a couple of seasons left at a high level, making a short-term deal a logical strategic move for the Wearside club to bolster their squad depth.
