Sullivan targets sub-two-minute 800m at USATF Open Nationals following Edmonton victory

Emma Sullivan has secured her first professional victory, marking a significant milestone in her transition from collegiate athletics to the professional circuit. The former Shepherd Hill Regional track star won the 800m at the Edmonton Athletics Invitational on July 12, clocking 2:00.09 to set a personal best. The result marks Sullivan’s first international race and her first appearance against a professional field.

Sullivan, a Kennesaw State University athlete who completed her bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies in December 2024, is now preparing for the USATF Open Nationals in New York from July 23-26. The upcoming event will serve as her final collegiate appearance before she officially turns professional. Her primary objective is to break the two-minute barrier in the 800m, a goal she describes as attainable after consistently nearing the mark in recent competitions.

The victory in Edmonton follows a challenging recovery period for Sullivan, who missed most of her junior indoor and outdoor track seasons at Kennesaw State due to a torn Achilles tendon. The injury imposed a significant physical and mental toll, leading to moments where she questioned her ability to continue competing. However, Sullivan has reported no setbacks since her rehabilitation, stating she is in the best physical condition of her career and has remained healthy throughout the current season.

Sullivan’s recent competitive history highlights her rapid improvement. At the 2025 NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, she placed 12th in the 800m with a time of 2:05.71. Prior to that, she ran a personal best of 2:00.37 in the semifinal, narrowly missing the final. She noted the historic nature of the NCAA final, where all eight qualifiers broke the two-minute mark for the first time in the meet’s history.

Beyond her athletic achievements, Sullivan has earned a coaching certificate alongside her degree. Following her professional running career, she intends to teach kindergarten and potentially coach at the Division 1 college level. She has maintained close contact with her former Shepherd Hill coaches, Nicole Fossas and Len Harmon, acknowledging their role in her development. Sullivan enters the USATF Open Nationals with a focus on delivering a strong final performance in her Kennesaw State uniform.
