Subnautica 2 Enters Early Access Amidst Renewed Development Focus
The new gameplay trailer reveals the planet Alterra, where players must survive after a colony ship malfunction, marking a return to production after leadership disputes were resolved in March.

Subnautica 2 has officially entered Early Access, arriving on Steam, Xbox, and Epic platforms on 14 May. Developed by Unknown Worlds and published by Krafton, the title marks a significant milestone for the studio following a period of significant operational disruption.
The latest gameplay trailer, released ahead of the launch, showcases the initial dive into the game's new setting, the planet Alterra. The narrative places players in the role of a Pioneer stranded on this world after the colony ship CICADA malfunctions during a journey away from conflict. Despite the ship's artificial intelligence insisting the mission continue, the crew is left facing near-insurmountable odds to ensure the future of humanity on the new world.
This release comes after development faced substantial hurdles last summer when it was reported that Krafton had dismissed the heads of the studio. The dispute escalated into litigation, creating uncertainty regarding the project's trajectory. However, a court order issued in March resolved the immediate leadership crisis by mandating the reinstatement of Unknown Worlds CEO Ted Gill, allowing the team to resume operations.
With the legal impasse cleared, the studio has indicated that the project is back on track. The developers have shared glimpses of the game through a recent two-hour livestream and the accompanying trailer, offering a deeper look at the survival mechanics that defined the original series. The focus remains on the exploration themes and underwater survival elements that established the franchise's reputation.
Looking ahead, the path to a full commercial release is expected to be lengthy. Unknown Worlds has stated that the game is scheduled to remain in Early Access for approximately two to three years. This extended period allows the community to shape the development process before the final version is completed.
While the launch signifies a return to stability for the partnership between Unknown Worlds and Krafton, the long-term stability of the project post-release remains subject to future business decisions. The specific duration of the Early Access phase is currently an estimate rather than a guaranteed timeline, leaving the full scope of the game's final mechanics to be determined over the coming years.
