Squad restructuring drives pursuit of Portuguese left-back

VfB Stuttgart have moved to secure the services of Cercle Brugge left-back Nazinho, marking a significant escalation in their summer transfer planning. The pursuit, which was first reported in March, has gained momentum following the club’s qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League. According to German publication Kicker, the prospect of competing in Europe’s premier club competition is a decisive factor in the race to sign the Portuguese international.

The Portuguese player has established himself as a key contributor in the Belgian league, recording three goals and eight assists across 30 league appearances for Cercle Brugge this season. Stuttgart scouts observed Nazinho during a 2-1 victory over FCV Dender, where he completed the full 90 minutes, providing the club with recent data on his current form and tactical application.

The move addresses a structural deficiency in Stuttgart’s current squad configuration. With Ramon Hendriks better suited to central defence, the club has relied on Maximilian Mittelstädt to fill the left-back role. However, Mittelstädt has been deployed as a left-sided centre-back in a back three during the latter stages of the season, a position that does not fully utilise his profile or address the specific need for a traditional full-back.

Manager Sebastian Hoeneß has frequently utilised Chris Führich in the left-back position to mitigate this gap. Yet, Kicker reports that Hoeneß prefers to deploy the attacking player further up the pitch, where his offensive capabilities can be more effectively leveraged. The acquisition of a specialist left-sided defender would allow for a more balanced tactical setup and optimise the deployment of existing squad members.

Initial interest in Nazinho emerged earlier in the year, but the Champions League qualification has elevated the club’s standing in potential negotiations. While the specific timeline for contract discussions remains undefined, the pursuit has entered a new phase as Stuttgart seek to solidify their squad for European competition. It remains unclear whether other clubs are actively competing for the player’s signature.
