Stuttgart appoint Seimen as first-choice goalkeeper ahead of new season
VfB Stuttgart have confirmed Dennis Seimen will take the number one jersey following his successful loan spell at SC Paderborn, while also strengthening the squad with new signings and contract extensions.

VfB Stuttgart have officially confirmed that 20-year-old Dennis Seimen will serve as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper for the upcoming season. The appointment marks a significant shift in the team’s defensive setup, with Seimen returning to the squad following a loan spell at SC Paderborn, where he played a pivotal role in securing promotion.
The decision follows the departure of Alexander Nübel, who is returning to parent club Bayern Munich after three seasons on loan at Stuttgart. Seimen steps into the void left by Nübel, having demonstrated his readiness through consistent performances in Germany’s second division during his time with Paderborn.
Sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth expressed full confidence in the young goalkeeper’s capabilities, dismissing any notion that the move is a trial. “Dennis is not an experiment; we fully believe he is ready for the role as our number one,” Wohlgemuth told the DPA. He emphasised that there are no differing opinions within the club’s hierarchy regarding the decision, noting that Seimen’s rapid adaptation to higher levels of performance has been evident throughout his development.
Wohlgemuth highlighted Seimen’s trajectory, which includes appearances for Germany’s youth national teams and progression through the third and second divisions. The sporting director noted that while the goalkeeper lacks the experience of a veteran, his ability to quickly become an influential figure at each stage of his career has been consistent. “Dennis is a young goalkeeper who loves competition and challenges,” Wohlgemuth added.
To further bolster the goalkeeping department, Stuttgart have signed Marius Funk from Energie Cottbus. Veteran goalkeeper Fabian Bredlow will remain part of the squad, providing additional depth, while 18-year-old prospect Fabian Hellstern has recently extended his contract with the club. These moves signal a comprehensive restructuring of the squad’s defensive options as preparations for the new season intensify.
