Stubbs powers Hants to T20 Blast win against Essex
South African all-rounder’s rapid half-century and bowler’s personal best figures secure fifth straight home win for Hawks

Hampshire Hawks have secured their fifth consecutive home victory against the Essex Eagles, defeating them by 30 runs in the T20 Blast South Group. The win, reported by the ECB Reporters' Network and supported by Rothesay, was driven by a formidable 69 from Tristan Stubbs and a career-best bowling performance from Scott Currie. Stubbs, a South African all-rounder, arrived in England less than 24 hours prior to the match after playing for the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League.

Stubbs’ innings was the cornerstone of Hampshire’s total of 200-4. After a period of cautious batting where the score was 80-3 at the halfway point, Stubbs and fellow overseas player Hilton Cartwright accelerated the scoring rate. The pair added 84 runs from the final 37 balls, with Stubbs hitting five sixes in his 42-ball knock. Cartwright contributed significantly to the total, while Joe Weatherley also played a key role in stabilising the innings through a 64-run partnership with Stubbs earlier in the chase.

In response, Essex Eagles struggled to find momentum against a disciplined Hampshire attack. James Vince took a low diving catch to dismiss Paul Walter and bowled Matt Critchley early in the powerplay, stifling the Eagles' start. Scott Currie then took control, claiming 4-18, which included wickets in three successive overs. His figures represented a personal best and were instrumental in restricting Essex to 170-7, ensuring the target set by Hampshire remained out of reach.

Essex’s chase was further hampered by the lack of support for Luc Benkenstein, who scored 48 runs off 31 balls. Despite his efforts, the Eagles could not replicate the explosive form shown by Stubbs. Simon Harmer hit some late sixes, but the deficit was too large to overcome, leaving Essex with their second consecutive defeat in the competition.

The result reinforces Hampshire’s strong home record against this opposition, building on their status as last year’s runners-up. For Essex, the loss marks a difficult start to the campaign, having now lost their opening two games. The victory provides a significant boost to Hampshire’s standing in the South Group as the competition progresses.
