This speculation has gained traction following public encouragement from Indianapolis Colts receiver Michael Pittman Jr., who urged Smith-Schuster to return to Pittsburgh. The discussion highlights the team’s strategic planning for a season that begins with a matchup against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, 13 September.
According to a predictive roster analysis published by Yahoo Sports/Steelers Wire, the Steelers would benefit significantly from Smith-Schuster’s versatility. The proposed 53-man roster for the 2026 season includes Pittman Jr., DK Metcalf, Roman Wilson, Germie Bernard, Ben Skowronek, and Kaden Wetjen. However, the analysis notes that Skowronek and Wetjen are viewed as more valuable on special teams than in the receiving game, while Wilson and Bernard possess little to no NFL experience.
Smith-Schuster, aged 29, brings 121 games of professional experience to the table.
