Steelers tight end unit ranked fifth in NFL ahead of 2026 season
Pittsburgh’s transition to a run-oriented identity under Mike McCarthy positions the group for a significant role, despite roster changes and an inconsistent 2025 campaign.

NFL analyst Bucky Brooks has ranked the Pittsburgh Steelers’ tight end group as the fifth-best in the league heading into the 2026 season. The assessment, published by Yahoo Sports, cites the physicality and versatility of Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington as the primary drivers of the ranking, specifically highlighting their effectiveness as edge blockers in the running game.
Brooks noted that the Steelers’ inclusion on the list may surprise some observers, but emphasised the grit of Freiermuth and Washington. He argued that their ability to knock defenders off the ball on running plays allows Pittsburgh to create big play opportunities on the ground through off-tackle runs and sweeps. This evaluation marks a shift in perception for a position group that endured an inconsistent 2025 season.
During the 2025 campaign, former tight end Jonnu Smith struggled to find rhythm within the offense, while Freiermuth was occasionally absent from the passing attack despite being a reliable target. Washington’s season was also disrupted by a broken arm suffered late in the year. The departure of Smith and the exit of fullback-tight end hybrid Connor Heyward, who joined the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency, have necessitated a restructuring of the unit.
Head coach Mike McCarthy is overseeing an offensive structure that leans heavily into a physical, run-oriented identity designed to wear down defenses over four quarters. Freiermuth remains the clear receiving threat in the group and is expected to benefit from a more stable offensive scheme. Washington is developing into one of the league’s more imposing blocking tight ends and is poised for an expanded role near the goal line.
The Steelers are also relying on younger players to fill the void left by Heyward. Rookie fifth-round pick Riley Nowakowski is expected to compete for the versatile role previously held by the departed hybrid, while former New England Patriots draft pick Jaheim Bell is battling for a roster spot as a move tight end and special teams contributor. JJ Galbreath remains in the mix after alternating between the practice squad and active roster.
Whether the Steelers truly possess a top-five unit may depend on Washington’s development as a pass catcher and Freiermuth’s ability to return to being a focal point of the offense. However, the group’s alignment with Pittsburgh’s desired offensive identity suggests that Brooks’ ranking may prove accurate as the 2026 season progresses.
