Steelers secure Darnell Washington on four-year, $42 million extension
The Pittsburgh Steelers have agreed to a four-year, $42 million extension with tight end Darnell Washington, including $21 million guaranteed, following a season where he recorded career highs in receptions and yards.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have finalised a four-year, $42 million contract extension with tight end Darnell Washington, securing the player’s services through the remainder of his career trajectory. The agreement, which includes $21 million in guaranteed money, follows Washington’s emergence as a key contributor during the 2025 season. The deal places Washington on the final year of his rookie contract, effectively locking in a player who has transitioned from a developmental prospect to a core component of the team’s offensive structure.
Washington, selected in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, entered the extension period after recording career highs of 31 receptions and 364 receiving yards. Historically utilised as a blocking tight end, Washington demonstrated expanded receiving capabilities last season, establishing a productive rapport with quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers publicly praised Washington’s intelligence and agility, noting that the player’s speed and shifty playing style often surprised opponents despite his substantial size.
The quarterback’s confidence in Washington was bolstered by the tight end’s physical development and tactical awareness. Washington revealed during the 2025 season that he weighed 311 pounds, significantly above his listed playing weight of 264 pounds. Rodgers highlighted Washington’s detailed-oriented approach and consistent ability to make game-changing plays, suggesting that the player’s combination of size and athleticism made him uniquely suited for his position.
Washington’s impact was most visibly demonstrated during the Steelers’ Week 11 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, where he executed a notable stiff-arm play that flattened multiple defenders. This performance helped dispel earlier speculation that Washington might transition to offensive tackle, with Rodgers affirming that Washington’s skill set in the passing game and on the line of scrimmage was too valuable to relocate.
The extension marks the second significant contract renewal for a member of the Steelers’ 2023 draft class, following outside linebacker Nick Herbig’s four-year, $100 million deal. Washington’s agreement comes despite a Week 17 injury sustained during a loss to the Cleveland Browns, the specific nature of which remains undisclosed. The deal underscores the organisation’s commitment to retaining young talent that has demonstrated both immediate production and long-term potential within their system.
