Steelers-Cowboys trade corridor opens as Joey Porter Jr. contract standoff deepens
With the season opener approaching, the Pittsburgh Steelers face a critical decision on whether to resolve their impasse with veteran cornerback Joey Porter Jr. or leverage a trade relationship with the Dallas Cowboys.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have officially described their relationship with veteran cornerback Joey Porter Jr. as an "impasse," a term used by head coach Mike McCarthy to characterise the current standstill in contract negotiations. Porter has been holding out of practice while seeking a new deal, a situation complicated by his placement on the physically unable to perform list following an aggravated back injury sustained during the team’s initial mobility tests.
The urgency of the situation is underscored by the upcoming 13 September season opener against the Atlanta Falcons, which serves as the team’s unofficial deadline for resolution. Teammate Jalen Ramsey, who was removed from the PUP list on Monday, has publicly urged for a swift settlement, noting that the secondary has not yet practised together. Ramsey’s comments highlight the operational risk of having a key defensive asset sidelined by both injury and contractual uncertainty.
While it remains more likely that Porter will remain in Pittsburgh through the 2026 season, the Dallas Cowboys have emerged as the most logical alternative destination. The Cowboys possess significant salary cap space, a position strengthened by their "spending mode" following the trade of Micah Parsons last summer. Furthermore, the established history of significant transactions between Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and Steelers general manager Omar Khan provides a proven institutional pathway for a potential deal.
The Cowboys’ interest is also driven by a strategic desire to end a 31-year championship drought. Acquiring Porter would complement their existing secondary and provide a mentoring figure for first-round pick Caleb Downs. For the Steelers, a trade would allow them to address their own roster needs while potentially acquiring assets from a franchise willing to make splashy moves.
Other National Football Conference teams are also being monitored as potential landing spots. The Chicago Bears, dealing with injuries to starting safety Coby Bryant and nickelback Kyler Gordon, represent a viable option, particularly given the transactional history between Khan and Bears GM Ryan Poles. The Carolina Panthers offer a different angle, with the possibility of a swap involving veteran cornerback Mike Jackson, who is in the final year of his contract.
The New York Giants, New Orleans Saints, and Green Bay Packers also present compelling scenarios. The Giants, under new coach John Harbaugh, have heightened expectations and need to strengthen a secondary that faces a division with elite quarterbacks. Meanwhile, the Saints and Packers, both seeking to snap recent droughts or playoff slumps, are franchises that measure themselves by championships and may be willing to swing big to secure a top-tier defender like Porter.
