Steelers go 'Pack' to the future, roll with Aaron Rodgers, Mike McCarthy: Fantasy football 2026 outlook
Fantasy analyst Scott Pianowski argues Pittsburgh’s new regime offers stability rather than a significant offensive upgrade

The Pittsburgh Steelers have entered a new era following the resignation of head coach Mike Tomlin in January, ending a 19-season tenure marked by 13 playoff appearances and no losing records. In his place, 62-year-old Mike McCarthy has been introduced as the new head coach, bringing with him a long-standing professional relationship with quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The 42-year-old Rodgers has confirmed his return for another season, a move that Yahoo Sports analyst Scott Pianowski characterises as a continuation of existing structures rather than a radical shift.

Pianowski’s assessment for the 2026 fantasy football outlook suggests that Rodgers is no longer a franchise driver but rather a "fill-in" option. While Rodgers finished 18th in cumulative fantasy quarterback points last season due to playing all 16 games, his per-game output dropped to 28th. He recorded only four weekly finishes inside the top 10 and failed to surpass 300 passing yards in any single contest, indicating a decline in high-end fantasy viability despite his veteran status.

The analysis posits that any potential playoff return for Pittsburgh in 2026 will likely stem from its defence. The team’s defensive DVOA has outranked its offensive DVOA in seven consecutive seasons. Consequently, the offensive burden is projected to fall on running backs Jaylen Warren and Rico Dowdle, who are identified as the key players for the upcoming campaign.

Rodgers remains an upgrade over the Steelers’ existing quarterback room, which includes veteran Mason Rudolph and rookies Will Howard and Drew Allar. Howard was selected in the sixth round in 2025, while Allar was a third-round pick in April 2026. Pianowski notes that McCarthy’s extensive experience, including 24 years as a head coach or offensive coordinator, provides a known quantity, though Rodgers’ role is viewed more as a safety net than a primary offensive engine.

Wide receivers DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr. are expected to see increased targets, with Metcalf potentially moving into the WR3 conversation and Pittman viewed as a solid backup option. Metcalf, who finished as a WR20 on total points last year, and Pittman, who had a similar statistical profile in Indianapolis, are recommended primarily as backup selections rather than Week 1 starters. Rookie second-round pick Germie Bernard currently sits third on the depth chart, while tight end Pat Freiermuth is described as a low-ceiling streamer.

Pianowski advises against proactive drafting of the Steelers’ passing game assets, suggesting that Rodgers, Metcalf, and Pittman belong in the streamer or backup files. The overarching theme for Pittsburgh’s 2026 outlook, described as "Pack to the Future," reflects a reliance on familiar personnel and defensive strength rather than a transformative offensive overhaul.
