Steel Dynamics, Inc. Q2 2026 Earnings Call Summary
Q2 2026 results show 30 per cent rise in operating income; management targets 650,000-tonne annual capacity by 2027

Steel Dynamics, Inc. reported record quarterly steel shipments of 3.7 million tons for the second quarter of 2026, a figure driven by robust demand in the non-residential construction sector. The company’s steel operations operating income rose 30 per cent sequentially, supported by higher realised pricing and improved value-added spreads. Management noted that spreads to hot band recovered $70 per ton from late 2025 lows, contributing to the strong financial performance.

The firm maintained a mill utilisation rate of 90 per cent, significantly outperforming the domestic industry average of 81 per cent. This efficiency was attributed to internal manufacturing support and unique customer supply chain solutions. Looking ahead, management projects a sharp increase in aluminium rolling mill volumes and profitability in the second half of 2026, coinciding with the commissioning of a third cold mill and the subsiding of startup costs.

Strategic positioning in the automotive sector was bolstered by lower carbon content steel offerings and early product qualification for aluminium alloys 5182 and 5754. The company is addressing a structural U.S. supply deficit of 1.4 million metric tons in aluminium, with two-thirds of existing steel customers already consuming aluminium sheet. Management expects scrap content to increase as operations stabilise, serving as a primary driver for margin expansion in the second half of the year.

Capital investment for the second half of 2026 is estimated between $300 million and $350 million, focusing on the operational optimization of recent growth projects. Management expects the $5 billion investment in Sinton, coated lines, and aluminium to eventually generate over $1.4 billion of through-cycle annual EBITDA. The company also recorded a $16 million non-cash impairment charge related to the strategic relocation of a recycled aluminium slab centre.

Operational updates included a fatal accident at a New Process Steel facility in April, which has prompted a renewed focus on safety protocols and the 'Take Control of Safety' philosophy. Management also flagged potential disruptions from Asian steel exports, advocating for Section 301 remedies to be additive to existing 232 tariffs to preserve domestic market stability. The company maintained its $650 million to $700 million through-cycle EBITDA guidance, noting that current market spreads are considerably higher than those used in the original forecast.
