Square Enix reveals Kingdom Hearts IV gameplay and Switch 2 launch plans

Square Enix has unveiled the first substantial look at Kingdom Hearts IV during a Nintendo Direct presentation on June 9, 2026. The publisher confirmed that the title will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on day one, alongside PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. No specific release date for the game was provided during the presentation.
The newly released trailer depicts protagonist Sora navigating the city of Quadratum, a setting that appears to be a modern metropolis. The footage showcases high-flying combat sequences and includes the return of familiar characters Goofy and Donald Duck. Glimpses of new characters were also shown, though their identities were not detailed in the source material.
Narration from an Organization 13 member frames the trailer, with dialogue describing the arrival of light and darkness in the world "only after we defined it." This marks the first new trailer for the title in over four years, following an initial glimpse in 2022. Kingdom Hearts IV is the first new mainline entry in the franchise since Kingdom Hearts III was released in 2019.
In conjunction with the trailer, Square Enix announced the Kingdom Hearts Collection, a bundle containing the first three mainline games. The collection is scheduled to launch on October 8 across the same platforms as the new title, allowing players to access multiple versions of the earlier entries in the series.
The Nintendo Direct presentation also touched on other upcoming titles for the Switch 2. Orbitals, a puzzle adventure game, was confirmed for a September 3 launch as a Switch 2 exclusive, while Xenoblade Genesis, the next mainline entry in its series, is scheduled for release in 2027.
