Guard’s disciplined routine and fourth-quarter efficiency anchor San Antonio’s push against Oklahoma City

De'Aaron Fox has assumed the role of team closer for the San Antonio Spurs during the 2026 NBA playoffs, following his trade from the Sacramento Kings. The 28-year-old guard has stabilised the young roster alongside Victor Wembanyama, contributing significantly in clutch moments with elite fourth-quarter scoring and playmaking. Despite managing a high ankle sprain sustained in Game 4 against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Fox helped San Antonio eliminate the Portland Trail Blazers and tie the conference semifinals series 2-2 against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Fox’s approach to the postseason is defined by a strict adherence to routine, a discipline he maintains to ensure consistency on the court. He has deliberately avoided late-night team dinners to preserve his schedule, a habit he says helps him remain levelheaded regardless of shooting performance. This structured lifestyle has been instrumental in his ability to play through injury, including recording a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in Game 4 against Oklahoma City despite the ankle sprain.

The impact of Fox’s presence is evident in the team’s turnover statistics. Since his return from the ankle injury, San Antonio has reduced its turnovers from 22 per game to 14 per game. In the fourth quarter of the playoffs, Fox has committed only two turnovers while recording 16 assists, ranking among only five players with at least 50 points and 15 assists in the fourth quarter this postseason. The Spurs hold a 7-1 record when Fox plays significant minutes, compared to a 2-3 record when he sits.

Fox’s integration into the Spurs’ system has required a shift from his previous role as a ball-dominant star in Sacramento. He has adapted to sharing the floor with Wembanyama, facilitating for young players like Dylan Harper and Steph Castle while maintaining his own scoring threat. Fox changed his jersey number from No. 5 to No. 4 to honour his wife, Recee, whose college number it was, and who provides technical feedback on his free-throw mechanics.

The Spurs did not list Fox or Dylan Harper on the official injury report for Games 4 and 5 despite their leg injuries, a decision that underscores the team’s reliance on their guards. As the series heads into Game 5, Fox’s ability to create his own shots and manage the game in critical moments remains a central factor in the Spurs’ championship aspirations.
