Spotify to adopt Apple’s new video podcast tech, offering creators easier cross-platform distribution
Cross-platform rollout scheduled for later this year

Spotify has announced plans to adopt Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) technology, a move designed to facilitate the distribution and monetisation of video podcasts on Apple Podcasts. The integration allows creators to maintain their existing workflows while reaching Apple’s user base, with video quality dynamically adjusting to network speeds. The rollout is scheduled for later this year.

The adoption of HLS technology, which Apple recently introduced on its platform to enhance the video experience, means that Spotify-hosted shows will be able to distribute content across both services without requiring changes to current setups. The technology automatically adjusts video quality in real time based on network speed, aiming to provide a consistent experience for listeners regardless of whether they are on fast Wi-Fi or cellular data.

Concurrently, Spotify confirmed that creators using major hosting providers—including Libsyn, Podigee, Audioboom, Audiomeans, and Podspace—can already publish video content directly to Spotify and earn revenue through the Spotify Partner Program. This cross-platform publishing capability is currently live, following an earlier announcement made earlier this year.

This development follows Spotify’s initial launch of video podcasts in 2020 and recent efforts to lower monetisation barriers for creators. Earlier this year, the platform reduced the requirements for video monetisation to expand creator access, signalling a continued commitment to visual content as a driver of growth in the podcasting sector.

As of November 2025, the platform reported nearly half a million shows and over 390 million users engaging with video podcast content. Spotify also indicated that it plans to introduce additional monetisation methods for creators, including direct sales and new partner integrations, as it seeks to strengthen its position in the evolving digital audio landscape.
