Spotify introduces verified artist badges to help distinguish humans from AI
Streaming giant introduces green checkmark system to prioritise active fan interest over functional background music

Spotify has officially launched a new "Verified by Spotify" badge to assist listeners in identifying authentic human artists amidst a growing tide of AI-generated music on its platform. The verification mark, displayed as a green checkmark alongside the text "Verified by Spotify", will appear on artist profiles and within search results over the coming weeks. This initiative marks a strategic shift for the streaming service, focusing on labelling verified human content rather than relying solely on the pre-emptive deletion of AI tracks, a contrast to the approach taken by rival Deezer.

To qualify for the badge, artists must demonstrate an identifiable presence both on and off the platform. Spotify is looking for evidence such as concert dates, merchandise sales, and linked social accounts, alongside consistent listener engagement over time. Profiles that primarily represent AI-generated music or AI personas are explicitly ineligible for verification. The company is prioritising artists with active fan interest and notable contributions to music culture, while excluding those creating functional or background music designed for passive listening.

At the time of launch, Spotify estimates that more than 99 per cent of artists that listeners actively search for will be verified. The majority of these verified profiles represent independent creators across a broad mix of genres, career stages, and regions. The rollout is ongoing due to the vast number of profiles on the platform, and the absence of a badge does not indicate that a profile will not receive one in the future.

Concurrent with the verification badge, Spotify is introducing a new profile section in beta across all artist profiles. This feature highlights career milestones, release activity, and touring activity to showcase authentic engagement even for unverified profiles. The update serves as a proxy for authenticity, giving users a quick way to gauge an artist's genuine activity before full verification is granted.

These measures follow increasing industry concerns regarding AI impersonators and low-quality content, often referred to as "AI slop". The move comes shortly after Sony Music requested the removal of more than 135,000 AI-generated songs impersonating its artists, and as Deezer reported that AI-generated tracks now account for 44 per cent of all new daily uploads. Spotify had previously begun beta testing an "Artist Profile Protection" feature to allow creators more control over releases associated with their names.

In a blog post, Spotify stated that the goal of the program is to make it easier for users to trust and understand the human artistry behind the music they listen to. The company aims to develop long-term, meaningful connections between listeners and the artists they love, ensuring that the platform remains a space for genuine human creativity.
