Spotify is narrating magazine articles now
Streaming giant adds over 650 articles from major publications to its audio ecosystem

Spotify has launched a new format for narrated long-form magazine articles, integrating more than 650 pieces into its existing audiobook library. The content, produced by the company’s in-house Audiobooks team, is available in English in regions where Spotify’s audiobook service is offered. The initial rollout features articles from prominent publications including Rolling Stone, The Atlantic, Vogue, Variety, Billboard, Vibe, GQ, Wired, Vanity Fair, and Pitchfork.

All narrated articles are under two hours in length. Premium subscribers can access the content within their existing monthly audiobook allowance, while free users are offered the option to purchase individual articles for $1.99. It remains unclear whether this fee represents a per-article charge or grants access to a separate subscription tier dedicated to articles.

Colleen Prendergast, Spotify’s Audiobooks licensing lead, described the initiative as a natural extension of the platform’s core offerings. She stated that the move aims to introduce long-form journalism in audio format, focusing on topics that resonate with existing audiences. According to Prendergast, the strategy is designed to meet listeners where they are to build healthy listening habits, with the long-term goal of growing engagement with books over time.

The launch follows recent introductions of artificial intelligence tools across the platform, including features for generating daily podcasts, creating audiobook playlists, and remixing songs from artists represented by Universal Music Group. Despite these prior AI deployments, Spotify declined to confirm whether artificial intelligence was utilised in the narration of the new magazine articles when asked for clarification.

This expansion marks another step in Spotify’s diversification beyond its traditional music and podcast streams. By incorporating shorter-form journalistic content into its audio ecosystem, the company is testing new avenues for user engagement and content consumption within its established infrastructure.
