SportsLine model backs Phillies over Padres in Thursday MLB matchup
Philadelphia enters as money-line favourite as model cites recent pitching struggles for both starters

SportsLine’s computer model has released its predictions for the Major League Baseball contest between the Philadelphia Phillies and the San Diego Padres on Thursday, June 4, 2026. The simulation, which has run 10,000 iterations of the matchup, identifies the Phillies (32-29) as the -191 money-line favourites against the Padres (32-28). The game is scheduled to begin at 1:05 p.m. ET at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
The Phillies have established dominance in the current three-game series, having won the first two contests by identical 3-2 scores. This victory streak extends their winning record against San Diego to six straight games, a run that dates back to the previous season. Conversely, the Padres have suffered four consecutive defeats, marking the third time this season they have endured a four-game losing streak, which ties for the longest such period in their current campaign.
Pitching performance has been a central factor in the model’s analysis. Zack Wheeler (4-1, 2.27 ERA) is set to start for Philadelphia, while Lucas Giolito (2-0, 4.97 ERA) takes the mound for San Diego. The model projects an Over on the total runs line of 8.5, citing recent poor pitching performances by both starters. Wheeler allowed four earned runs and four home runs in his last outing, while Giolito surrendered four earned runs in just 2.2 innings in his most recent start.
Specific player projections highlight offensive potential for both lineups. The model forecasts that Phillies hitters Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, and Trea Turner will each achieve at least 1.5 total bases. Harper, Schwarber, and Turner have combined for five home runs in 27 at-bats against Giolito. On the opposing side, the model projects Fernando Tatis Jr., Jackson Merrill, and Xander Bogaerts to each score at least 0.5 runs.
SportsLine’s projection model enters Week 11 of the MLB season with a 17-5 record (77% success rate) on its top-rated MLB picks. The model also reported nearly 30 units of profit from home run prop picks in 2025. Based on the simulations, the model indicates that both teams are projected to score more than four runs on average, reinforcing the value in the Over selection for this Thursday’s contest.
