Astros vs. Padres prediction, odds, time: 2026 MLB picks for 'Sunday Night Baseball' by proven model
Computer simulation projects high-scoring affair in San Diego

The SportsLine Projection Model has released its latest analysis for the Major League Baseball clash between the Houston Astros and the San Diego Padres, scheduled for Sunday Night Baseball at Petco Park. The model, which simulates every game 10,000 times, has identified value in the Over on the 8.5 total runs line, projecting a final tally of 8.9 runs for the contest.

The matchup carries significant weight in the broader league structure. The Astros (60-58) currently hold a half-game lead in the American League West, while the Padres (61-57) sit one game out of the final National League wild-card position. The teams have split the first two games of the series, setting up a decisive rubber match with first pitch scheduled for 7:20 p.m. ET.

Pitching performance appears to be a primary driver for the model’s high-scoring projection. Houston’s starting pitcher, Cristian Javier, has struggled this season with a 1-2 record and a 6.59 earned run average, alongside a 1.68 walks plus hits per inning pitched (WHIP). Conversely, San Diego’s Randy Vasquez has shown vulnerability at home, posting a 4.91 ERA at Petco Park over eight starts, during which he has allowed 10 home runs.

Historical trends within the series and recent team form support the projection. While Game 2 of the current series went Under, Game 1 produced nine runs. Furthermore, three of Houston’s past four games and five of San Diego’s last seven have cleared the total runs line. The model entered Week 19 of the MLB season with a 39-23 record on its top-rated picks, adding to its track record of profitability, including nearly 30 units of profit on home run prop picks in 2025.

Current betting markets reflect the competitive nature of the series, with San Diego listed as the -122 favourite and Houston at +105. The SportsLine model, however, focuses on the total runs market as the primary value play, citing the specific pitching mismatches and home-field struggles of the Padres’ starter.
