📺 A country at a standstill, Spain v France breaks viewing records
Public broadcaster TVE captures 71.2 per cent audience share as 14.5 million viewers tune in for 2-0 win over France

The Spanish national football team’s 2026 World Cup semi-final victory over France has established a new national television viewing record in Spain. The match, played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Tuesday, 14 July 2026, achieved an 81.3 per cent audience share with an average of 14,514,000 viewers across all platforms.

Public broadcaster TVE’s La 1 channel was the primary driver of this consumption, recording 12,716,000 viewers and capturing a 71.2 per cent share of the market. Within the wider RTVE ecosystem, alternative channels also contributed to the aggregate figures, with Teledeporte posting a 2.6 per cent share representing 460,000 viewers. In Catalonia, La 2 de TVE recorded an 11.5 per cent share, reflecting regional engagement alongside the national broadcast.

Pay platform DAZN Mundial attracted 1,009,000 viewers, accounting for a 5.7 per cent share. The combined broadcast ranks among the most-watched in Spanish history, although it remains below the viewership figures recorded for the 2010 World Cup final in South Africa.

On the pitch, Spain secured a 2-0 victory with goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro. The result halts France’s attempt to become only the third nation in history to reach three consecutive World Cup finals. France, entering the match as pre-tournament favourites, failed to register a shot on target until after the 80th minute, despite having scored 16 goals prior to the semi-final.

Spain advances to the World Cup final, where they will face either England or Argentina in New Jersey on Sunday. The victory concludes France’s campaign, which ends with a trip to the third-place match.
