European champions produce tactical masterclass to end favourites’ campaign

European champions Spain have advanced to the 2026 World Cup final after a comprehensive 2-0 victory over tournament favourites France at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The result, secured by goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro, concludes France’s campaign and marks the end of Kylian Mbappé’s participation in the tournament. Spain will now face either England or Argentina in the final match scheduled for Sunday, 19 July, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

The match was defined by Spain’s structural control, with their midfield, anchored by Rodri, effectively neutralising France’s attacking options. France entered the semi-final with high expectations following a goal-heavy run to this stage, but their front four, including captain Mbappé, were unable to penetrate Spain’s organised defence. French coach Didier Deschamps acknowledged the disparity in performance, stating his team was "a notch below" technically and confirming he will step down from his role following the tournament.

Spain’s lead was established in the 20th minute when referee Ivan Barton awarded a penalty after Lucas Digne fouled Lamine Yamal in the box. Oyarzabal converted the spot-kick to give Spain the advantage. The momentum shifted further against France in the 31st minute when key defender William Saliba was substituted off due to an injury and replaced by Maxence Lacroix. Spain maintained pressure throughout the first half, though France’s best chance fell to Mbappé, whose breakaway attempt was thwarted by a late block from Pau Cubarsi.

The second half saw Spain double their lead in the 58th minute through a precise finish from Pedro Porro, who capitalised on a one-two combination with Dani Olmo. Despite a flurry of substitutions from Deschamps in an attempt to alter the dynamic, France struggled to create meaningful opportunities against Spain’s disciplined defensive line. A potential third goal for Spain was disallowed for a marginal offside decision involving Yamal in the 61st minute.

The match concluded with visible frustration from the French camp, symbolised by captain Mbappé receiving a booking in the closing minutes for a foul on Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon. Spain coach Luis de la Fuente praised his team’s ability to manage the pressure against what he described as the best team in the world. The victory extends Spain’s competitive record over France, who they have defeated in their previous two meetings, and positions the European champions for a final appearance.
