Integration set for Q1 2027 as carrier shifts connectivity strategy; SpaceX prepares for potential IPO

SpaceX has secured a contract to equip more than 500 of American Airlines’ narrow-body aircraft with Starlink satellite Wi-Fi, according to a report by CNBC. The integration of the satellite technology is scheduled to commence in the first quarter of 2027, targeting the airline’s Airbus fleet, which includes the new A321XLR and A321neo models. This agreement represents a major infrastructure overhaul for the carrier’s domestic and short-haul operations.

While American Airlines is transitioning its narrow-body connectivity to Starlink, it will retain its current internet providers, Viasat and Panasonic, for its wide-body aircraft. This dual-provider strategy allows the airline to upgrade specific segments of its fleet while maintaining existing contracts for long-haul international flights. The move follows a partnership announced last year with AT&T to provide free Wi-Fi to AAdvantage members, though the strategic rationale behind shifting the narrow-body focus to SpaceX remains unexplained.

The deal underscores Starlink’s expanding dominance in the aviation connectivity sector. Operating a massive fleet of over 10,000 satellites, SpaceX has already secured contracts with several other major carriers, including United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Alaska Air, British Airways, and Air France. The company also reached a similar agreement with Alaska Air last year, further consolidating its position in the market.

Competitors are also vying for market share in the in-flight connectivity space. Delta Air Lines and JetBlue have signed agreements with Amazon’s Kuiper service, referred to as 'Leo' in some reports, to provide satellite internet. However, Starlink’s established infrastructure and speed advantages, which have significantly improved web browsing experiences compared to previous technologies, give it a competitive edge.

From a financial perspective, SpaceX’s connectivity unit, which includes Starlink, posted revenue of $11.4 billion last year, accounting for 61 percent of the company’s total sales. This strong performance is expected to bolster SpaceX’s upcoming initial public offering, which could occur as early as next month. Despite the revenue growth, the parent company reported losses of nearly $5 billion in 2025.
