Sovereignty and Magnitude headline Grade 1 Stephen Foster Stakes at Churchill Downs
The 2025 Kentucky Derby champion faces a star-studded lineup of older Thoroughbreds in the pivotal mile-and-eighth event.

The Grade 1 Stephen Foster Stakes took place at Churchill Downs in Louisville, featuring a five-horse field competing for a $2 million purse. The race serves as a potential preview for the Breeders’ Cup Classic, with the winner receiving automatic entry into the $7 million event at Keeneland on October 31. Headliner Sovereignty, the 2025 Kentucky Derby champion, faced top older Thoroughbreds including Magnitude, who entered as the top selection following a three-race winning streak that included the Dubai World Cup. Other entrants included White Abarrio, Journalism, and Baeza.
This mile-and-eighth run over the main track was inaugurated in 1982 and has long been a stepping stone towards Breeders’ Cup glory. Because the Foster is part of the Breeders’ Cup “win and you’re in” series, the victor will receive automatic entry into the $7 million Classic. All five entrants have enjoyed wins at the graded Stakes level and have combined to win over $25.6 million on the track.
Sovereignty has won two in a row, including the Kentucky Turf Cup on a synthetic surface at Turfway, and has finished in the top four in ten of his last eleven starts. Despite the consistent form, the analysis suggests looking elsewhere for the winner in this specific contest.
White Abarrio defeated Sovereignty and Journalism handily in the Oaklawn Handicap in his last start, ending a four-race losing streak. He is a winner of the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Classic and the 2025 Pegasus World Cup, and if he runs to form, he might just be the right one here.
Journalism won the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, and Travers as a three-year-old, missed the 2024 Breeders’ Cup Classic due to a fever, and finished second in the Oaklawn Handicap in his first start at four. While he has talent, questions remain regarding his progression in this older horse division.
Baeza won the grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby in 2025, has finished in the top three in eight of ten career starts, and previously finished sixth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic and third in the Alysheba Stakes. He is considered the wild card of the race and one of the most likely to pull the upset.
Magnitude won three races in a row, including a gate-to-wire victory in the Dubai World Cup on March 28, holding off Forever Young. He is the one to beat and the top selection, with the only question being how he performs in his first start since that long trip to Dubai. The race was scheduled as race 11 on a 12-race card featuring seven stakes races, with an expected post time of 6:03 pm Eastern.
