South Carolina basketball program confirms Maddy McDaniel withdrawal amid roster restructuring
The University of South Carolina has officially confirmed that guard Maddy McDaniel will not return to the women’s basketball team, leaving the program with one open roster spot as it prepares for the 2026-27 campaign.
South Carolina women’s basketball has formally announced that guard Maddy McDaniel is withdrawing from the university and will not return to the programme. The confirmation follows McDaniel’s initial decision in July to step away from the team for mental health reasons, a move that Coach Dawn Staley supported at the time.
In a statement released on Friday, Staley affirmed the program’s continued respect for McDaniel’s choices. “We respected Maddy’s decision in July, and we continue to do that in this next step,” Staley said. “She has been a valued part of our program's success, and she and her family will always be part of our Gamecock family. We wish her all the best as she chooses her future moves on and off the basketball court.”
McDaniel’s departure creates a significant structural gap for the Gamecocks. Last season, the 5-foot-9 guard averaged 4.3 points and 2.7 assists in 19.7 minutes per game off the bench. She was widely expected to assume a larger, more central role following the departure of star point guard Raven Johnson to the WNBA. With McDaniel now gone, the team lacks a true point guard, a vulnerability that mirrors the situation during the 2025-26 season when forward Ashlyn Watkins took a leave of absence.
The roster currently stands at 14 players, leaving one open spot as the team approaches the 2026-27 season. Staley has several avenues to fill the vacancy, including recruiting a high schooler graduating early or signing an international player. There is also the possibility of utilising a recent ruling that grants some members of the high school class of 2022 an additional year of eligibility, though sources note this option carries risk if the ruling is reversed.
The Gamecocks, who finished as national runners-up last season, have bolstered their backcourt with the addition of Texas transfer Jordan Lee. However, the loss of McDaniel’s playmaking remains a key administrative and tactical consideration. South Carolina is scheduled to open its 2026-27 season against Maryland on November 2 in Paris, France, with the roster situation still evolving ahead of the international fixture.
