Until Dawn 2 looks like Cabin in the Woods, but in a jungle
Liverpool studio shifts survival horror franchise from snowy peaks to tropical island setting

Liverpool-based developer Firesprite has confirmed it is developing Until Dawn 2, a standalone sequel to the 2015 survival horror title, with a projected release window of 2027 for the PlayStation 5. The announcement marks a significant continuation of the franchise under Sony Interactive Entertainment, which owns the intellectual property and fully acquired Firesprite in 2021.

The sequel departs from the original’s snowy mountain setting, relocating the narrative to a tropical island. Players will follow a cast of young adult ghost hunters who operate a fledgling paranormal investigation channel. The group has recently signed a deal with a television network, prompting their deployment to a remote location to collect footage, a premise that blends casual exploration with sudden violent encounters.

Firesprite has stated that the game will retain the series’ signature quick-time events and narrative branching mechanics, but with a heightened emphasis on interpersonal dynamics. The studio describes a system where managing relationships within the crew is paramount, noting that even minor character interactions can trigger a 'Butterfly Effect' with unforeseen consequences for the story’s outcome.

Visually and tonally, the project appears to adopt a 'teenage slasher' aesthetic. Early promotional material has drawn comparisons to the 2008 film Cabin in the Woods, suggesting a focus on genre tropes and character archetypes. The narrative premise involves high-stakes decisions, such as risking injury for content or managing scandalous affairs, all under the pressure of an intimidating production boss.

Sony has maintained tight control over the Until Dawn brand since its inception in 2015, when the original game was developed by Supermassive Games. While Supermassive released spiritual successors such as The Quarry and The Dark Pictures Anthology, the studio underwent significant restructuring in early 2024, including the departure of co-founders and widespread layoffs. Sony has continued to expand the franchise through spin-offs and a 2025 film and remake of the original title.

Until Dawn 2 is currently scheduled for a 2027 launch, though a specific month or day has not been confirmed. The game represents a strategic move by Sony to leverage its internal UK studios to deliver content that aligns with its established horror IP, while moving away from the developmental history of Supermassive Games.
