Sony unveils Xperia 1 VIII with AI camera tools and square sensor array, excluding US market
The new device features a 1/1.56-inch telephoto sensor, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, and retains the rare 3.5mm audio jack, while Sony confirms no plans for an American release.

Sony has officially launched the Xperia 1 VIII, its latest flagship smartphone, introducing a significant redesign to its rear camera architecture alongside new artificial intelligence capabilities. The device marks a departure from the vertical camera island seen in previous iterations, adopting a square rear camera array instead. Central to the update is the AI Camera Assistant, powered by Xperia Intelligence, which analyses scenes, subjects, and weather conditions to recommend colour tones, lens selections, and bokeh effects for the user.
Under the hood, the handset is driven by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Mobile Platform and features a 6.5-inch OLED display. A notable hardware retention is the inclusion of a 3.5mm audio jack, a feature increasingly absent from modern flagship devices. The front-facing camera has been upgraded to 12 megapixels, while the rear telephoto camera utilises a new 1/1.56-inch image sensor. Sony states this sensor is approximately four times larger than that of its predecessor, aiming to improve low-light performance through RAW multi-frame processing, HDR, and noise reduction.
Pricing for the Xperia 1 VIII is set at 1,499 euros (£1,399) for the base model equipped with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The higher-tier configuration, offering 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, is priced at 1,999 euros (£1,849). The device will be available in Graphite Black, Iolite Silver, Garnet Red, and Native Gold. Pre-orders are currently open in Europe, with an official release expected from June at the earliest.
Incentives for early adopters include a complimentary pair of Sony WH-1000XM6 headphones with pre-orders. However, the launch is geographically restricted. Sony has confirmed there are no plans to release the Xperia 1 VIII in the United States, continuing a longstanding strategy for the Xperia flagship line to exclude the American market.
The launch underscores Sony’s focus on photography enthusiasts and audio fidelity, leveraging the new AI features to assist with creative settings while maintaining hardware specifications that appeal to traditional smartphone users. The device represents a consolidated effort to refine the Xperia brand’s identity in a competitive European market.
