The Japanese giant emphasises human creativity over automation while reporting a sharp decline in console sales.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has publicly clarified during a recent earnings presentation that artificial intelligence is intended strictly as an augmentative tool to support creative teams. The company explicitly rejected the notion that AI will replace human talent in defining game vision, design, or emotional impact, stating that the core creative elements will always originate from the studios and performers.

To illustrate this approach, Sony highlighted the deployment of specific AI-powered utilities, such as 'Mockingbird', within its internal studios including Naughty Dog and Santa Monica Studio. This tool is designed to automate repetitive workflows and accelerate tasks like 3D modelling, animation, and quality assurance. By automating these processes, the company aims to improve software engineering productivity and allow developers to focus on higher-level creative decisions.

A specific application of this technology involves animating 3D facial models using performance capture data. Sony noted that 'Mockingbird' can complete animation work that previously took hours in a fraction of a second. Output from this tool has already appeared in titles such as *Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered*, demonstrating its integration into the production pipeline while ensuring that human performers remain central to the process.

Beyond game development, Sony disclosed a partnership with Bandai Namco to explore generative AI applications in video production. Through this collaboration, the companies have identified massive gains in speed and productivity per person, enabling the generation of sophisticated outputs that were previously unfeasible due to time constraints. However, Sony also acknowledged current limitations regarding the consistency and controllability of generative AI models.

The financial backdrop to these technological announcements was a significant downturn in hardware performance. Sony reported a 46 per cent year-on-year drop in PS5 sales following significant price increases. This decline coincided with the earnings call where the company outlined its strategic integration of AI to accelerate production cycles and overcome time limitations in creating complex outputs.

Despite the broader industry trend of generative AI appearing in major AAA titles, many independent developers continue to reject its use. Sony's stance suggests a cautious optimism, leveraging AI to enhance efficiency without compromising the human element that defines their brand. The company emphasises that while AI optimises how data is processed from live captures, it does not replace the human performers driving the creative vision.
