Sony and Xbox face investor scrutiny as hardware costs and strategy failures weigh on console sales
With the gaming industry in turmoil, Summer Game Fest 2026 presents a critical juncture for both firms to demonstrate value before the next hardware cycle begins.

The gaming sector is currently navigating a period of significant turbulence, characterised by rising hardware costs, persistent layoffs, and precarious conditions for major titles. Against this backdrop, Summer Game Fest 2026, which commences on Tuesday, offers Microsoft and Sony a platform to address investor and consumer concerns regarding the value proposition of their current-generation consoles.
Sony’s State of Play event, scheduled for June 2, will focus heavily on the PlayStation 5, a device that has seen sales decline by nearly 50 per cent year-on-year. This downturn is largely attributed to aggressive price increases, with the base model rising from a $499 launch price to $649, and the top-tier version reaching $899. To counter this, Sony is reportedly pivoting back towards console exclusives, aiming to leverage its historical strength in lavish single-player narratives following the failure of its live-service strategy.
The live-service pivot, notably marked by the $3.6 billion acquisition of Bungie in 2022, has yielded mixed results. Bungie has undergone multiple rounds of layoffs, announced plans to cease support for Destiny 2, and released Marathon, a title that is reportedly struggling in a volatile market. Consequently, Sony’s upcoming presentation must clearly signal a return to its core identity, featuring announcements such as Insomniac’s Wolverine, which is set to launch in September.
Microsoft faces a different set of challenges, primarily centred on brand identity and existential questions following an executive shakeup in April. New Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has implemented immediate changes, including an all-caps rebrand of the Xbox logo, in an effort to clarify the company’s direction after years of multiplatform launches and confusing hardware initiatives. The Xbox Games Showcase, airing on June 7 at 1 PM ET, is expected to address these concerns by highlighting exclusive titles such as Fable, Gears of War: E-Day, and the Halo remake.
Both companies are operating six years into the current console generation, a typical point for speculation regarding next-generation hardware like the PS6 or Xbox’s Project Helix. With consumer caution high regarding future pricing, the immediate priority for both firms is to demonstrate that current hardware justifies its cost. While the November launch of Grand Theft Auto VI may provide a temporary sales boost, Sony and Microsoft must use this window to stabilise their market positions amidst broader industry pressures.
