Snow takes centre stage in two new video game releases
Moomintroll: Winter's Warmth and Froggy Hates Snow utilise the unique atmospheric qualities of winter to deliver distinct gaming experiences across multiple platforms.

Water frequently receives the credit for demonstrating high-end graphics technology, with developers relying on physics engines and ray tracing to render splashing waves or reflective puddles. However, a new pair of video games argues that snow possesses a unique capacity to create a specific mood, offering an atmospheric power that technical specifications alone cannot replicate.
Moomintroll: Winter's Warmth is a family-friendly adventure set in a Scandinavian winter, where the player controls the titular character to assist the valley during the hibernation season. Following the established lore of the iconic Finnish fairy tale creatures, the game sees Moomintroll waking up early from his usual slumber to act as an errand boy for the community. The title is designed to be accessible for all ages, with mechanics that allow players to shovel pathways, roll giant snowballs to create bridges, and engage in snowball fights.
The game utilises snow as both a gameplay element and a navigation tool, where persistent footprints help players track their exploration. This approach contributes to a distinctively wintery feel that evokes a sense of cold regardless of the actual weather conditions outside. The hand-drawn aesthetic complements the weather systems, creating an environment where players feel the need to bundle up while navigating the frigid landscape.
In contrast, Froggy Hates Snow presents a roguelike experience where a frog must survive in a frigid landscape by digging through snow and managing exposure to reach hidden areas. The game features two primary modes: a traditional roguelike with combat involving shovels and tongues, and an adventure-focused mode without combat. Progression relies on digging through snow walls and returning to a warm base to avoid death by exposure, with upgrades available via a skill tree that includes items such as skis and a flamethrower.
Both titles are currently available on various platforms, with Froggy Hates Snow accessible on PC, PS5, Xbox, and Switch, while Moomintroll: Winter's Warmth is available on PC and Switch. These releases highlight the duality of snow in gaming, capturing both the playful and deadly aspects of the winter months without fear of frostbite.
While the industry often looks to water to showcase graphical prowess, these games demonstrate that snow remains a uniquely effective medium for establishing atmosphere. By focusing on the distinct moods of winter rather than purely technical feats, the titles offer a different kind of immersion for players seeking a specific seasonal experience.
